Kindergarten Learning Guidelines

 

These may vary depending on your state. This is simply a guideline to assist in knowing what is taught in Kindergarten.

 

Language Arts:

• Recognize and properly write each letter of the alphabet

• Prepositions (in, on, out, off by…)

• Find the correct word for the sentence

• Complete sentences

• Short and long vowel sounds

• Vowel vs Consonant

• Understanding characters in basic stories

• Retell a story in their own words

• Feelings and Emotions

• Main idea and Details in stories

• Beginning words (in. their, out, look, big, of, up, to, and, the, said…)

• Past, Present, Future (subject-verb agreement

• Compare and contrast (basics)

• Write the alphabet in order

• Text to graphic (Read a story, draw a scene)

• Exclamations, statements, and questions

• Journal and Reports (one or two sentences)

• Word beginning sounds

• Starting to sound simple words out

• Proper nouns

• Days of the week and the months

• Pronouns (they, it, I…)

• Verbs, nouns and adjectives

• Opinion sentence

• Sequence of events

• Proper handwriting and spacing between words

• Characters and their settings

• Story Structure (Beginning, middle and end)

• Story Conclusion

• Nouns singular and plural

 

Mathematics:

• Identify and write numbers

• Count objects and match or write the correct number

• Smallest to biggest and reverse

• Over, under, beside, behind…

• Problem solving

• Sequencing

• Patterns

• Greater than, Less than, equal to

• Diagrams (simple)

• Shapes

• Groups of ones and tens

• Dot to dot

• Skip counting by tens to 100

• Same and different

• Take apart simple number groups (you have 10 objects, circle a group of them Ex. 10 all together circle 4. 4 and 6 is 10)

• Simple addition and subtraction

• Addition word problems

• Subtraction word problems

• Which weighs more

• Classifying

• Vertical and Horizontal

• How many sides

• Three dimensional shapes
