My Preschool Curriculum

January

Around the world!

It is incredible and so much fun. We even had an around the world party where we asked parents to bring in one food item from anywhere in the world and they went all out!! It was a blast having the kids try all the foods. We decorated African tribal necklaces and wore Chinese hats that the kids made from paper plates. Parents brought in Empanadas, egg rolls, Dolmas, a special soup/curry (non-spicy) that originated from somewhere in North Africa, and so much more. We learned about the backgrounds of the families in our class and had a wonderful time. In this curriculum we let each child pick a coloring page, each page had a different monument on it. Once the child finished coloring it, we told the child about the monument then they had to share what they learned with the class. There are, of course an endless list of books that go hand in hand with this theme. We made Chinese lanterns, colored Dala horses and so much more.

St. Patrick’s Day is one of my favorite holidays and is absolutely a must. Once again though, there is only so much you can do with a holiday, so I usually add more to it. I chose weather, it goes perfectly with the area we are in as we end up having sunny days, rainy days and snowy days all in March. It also fits perfectly with rainbows. We do science experiments on how clouds and rain work and study the water cycle and how ice crystals form into snowflakes. This, combined with the holiday will give you an endless amount of curriculum for the month. Plenty of science, crafts and centers.

June

If you are one of those teachers or parents that enjoy keeping the learning going through the summer, like me, then here are our themes.

In June we study the deserts and the animals and plants that live in them. I absolutely love it and the kids can’t seem to get enough of this theme. We make rattlesnake crafts, work on fine motor skills buy creating cactuses with toothpicks and green pool noodles. We use sponges to demonstrate how a cactus soaks up water and so much more.

July

4th of July!! Another of my favorite holidays!! There are so many fun activities to do with this holiday. One fun thing I had to it, is the history of the US and camping!! We eat s’mores, I bring in a fake campfire and a small camping tent for dramatic play. We go outside and “pan for gold”, this is fun and easy. Just get a few pans and strainers from the dollar store and order the fake gold off of Amazon and do this activity in a kiddy pool filled with muddy water. It is messy and completely worth it!!
